7 Tips to Help You Dress for Your Next Camping Trip

There’s nothing worse when you are camping than when you are cold, wet, or uncomfortable because you are not dressed for the weather! Allow yourself to fully enjoy your outdoor experience, by making sure that you are selecting clothes that are appropriate for the weather and conditions that you will be in. We have compiled a list of 7 simple tips to keep in mind when you are packing for your next camping trip:

Layer Up

When you’re camping, you want to be ready for any weather scenario, so that you can continue to be comfortable even when the weather changes. Because of this, when you are camping, choose clothing that you can layer easily. If you layer a sweatshirt over a t-shirt, then you will be comfortable no matter the temperature. I went on a hike last year, and I did NOT layer my clothing- wearing only a tank top. It turned out to be cloudy and cold, and I was freezing! I could not focus on anything else, so I went to the visitors center, and paid $35 for a hoodie that I normally would not buy!

Stay Protected

Since you are surrounded by nature constantly when you are camping, you want to make sure that you are protected from the elements. It’s a good idea to invest in UV-resistant clothing so that your skin is protected from the sun. Also, if you are in a wooded area, it is smart to bring a bug shirt and/or a bug hat, so that you can continue to enjoy the outdoors, even with bugs around.

Embrace the Elements

Since you want to continue to enjoy yourself even when the weather changes, you will want to bring water-resistant and breathable clothing choices. When you are packing, include a lightweight rain jacket and rain pants, so that you don’t need to change your plans if it begins to rain. You should also include breathable pants so that you can go on hikes without overheating.

Protect Your Feet

If you are planning to be hiking on your trip, you should invest in sturdy hiking sandals, shoes or boots. You want to select shoes that have ankle support to assist you as you’re hiking. Make sure you break your new shoes in before you go on your trip! I decided to break in my new pair of hiking sandals on a 6 mile hike, and I ended up with terrible blisters!

Dress for Success

If you get wet while camping, it can be very uncomfortable, since there might not be somewhere you can go to get dry. Be prepared by bringing quick-drying and moisture-wicking clothing. That way, if you do get wet, it will dry fast, and will not upset your day.

Stay Warm

Be prepared for cold nights by packing warm clothing for nighttime. Bring insulated clothing like long underwear, base layers, and fleece jackets, so that you will be able to sleep through the night. It is also a good idea to bring a stocking cap, so your ears stay warm, too!

Don't Forget the Accessories

While accessories are small, they can impact your comfort levels too. Make sure to bring sunglasses and a hat, so that you are protected from the sun. Also, gloves are a good choice to keep your hands warm in the morning and evenings, when it is a little bit chilly.

Hopefully, these tips help ensure you are ready for your next camping trip. While camping, having clothing that is comfortable and functional is key. With those principles in mind, you will be sure to fully enjoy your next adventure outdoors!
